If you're a beginning runner, you might not know that's it's incredibly important to invest in good running shoes. The following tips will help you choose running shoes that are right for you.

First off, it’s important to understand how crucial good running shoes are. While good running shoes are expensive, they are essential for protecting your joints. If you're smart, you'll replace your running shoes when you hit 350 miles of running (about 4-6 months for most runners) and will only wear them to run. Heavier runners should replace shoes more frequently than light runners. Your shoes will last longer if you run on a treadmill or a track instead of asphalt.

Before replacing your shoes, do this simple test. Wet your feet, then step onto a dry piece of paper or concrete, and look at the shape of your footprint. If your footprint is wide and full, you need arch support. If your footprint is very curved, you probably don't need so much arch support.

Check your shoes for wear, and note where you feel extra stress in your ankles. This will help you determine if you have issues with over or under pronating. Basically you’re looking to see if your feet lean in (overpronation) or out (underpronation) or if they remain stable as you run (no need for extra support). If you have joint issues, you’ll probably need ankle stabilizing running shoes that also provide a lot of cushion.

Another factor to consider is the size of the toebox. Everyone's toes swell when running; make sure your shoes have ample room for swelling. It's not unusual for people to buy runner shoes one full size larger than the shoes they wear every day.

If you buy good running shoes, you'll increase your chances of developing a long lasting running hobby.
